Moe Berg's First Game in Brooklyn |
|
June 28, 1923
From the New York Times
Moe Berg, the shortstop recently obtained by the Robins from Princeton University, who yesterday played against Yale, made his debut in the seventh inning and made one hit. He ended the game by catching a line drive off [Cy] Williams’s bat, and threw to first for a double play.
February 24, 1942
Ten weeks after the US and Japan went to war, General Willian Donovan, head of the recently-formed office of strategic services (OSS), arranged for Moe to deliver a shortwave radio address, in Japanese, to the people of Japan.
Moe makes clear his affection and respect for the Japanese people and shows his grasp of their history. In retrospect, his closing call for the Japanese people to rise up against their traditional form of government seems naîve. There is no record of his broadcast having an effect on the Japanese populace.
